The Peacock Prince

Hi everyone!

Last week I watched a play called The Peacock Prince in Ranga Shankara. It was performed by Theatre Nisha from Chennai and directed by V. Balakrishnan.

The play was a dance drama based on a story from the Mahabharata. Since the Mahabharata is very complicated, I shall not attempt to explain this story. 🙂 Instead, I found this really great video which explains the part of the story in a very interesting manner. Its by the YouTube channel “Epified”. You should check them out, they put up some really interesting content mostly related to Indian mythology.

I thought the play was really good. It was performed by one person, and two people on instruments. The lady performing told the story by switching between Bharatnatyam and monologues. She was a really good dancer and managed to tell the whole story without a set and with just a scarf and a garland as props.

I would definitely encourage people to watch this play as even though the story line was a little difficult for someone like me to follow (considering my minimal knowledge of the Mahabharata), the actor performed it beautifully with amazing expressions and graceful dancing. Dancers as well as theatre people would enjoy this play. 🙂

Have a nice day!

I’m glad it made you learn a little bit more about mythology. (Also, hopefully you appreciate the importance of dance in theatre a bit more 😉 )
